It's hard to believe these two were painted 13 years ago; so much has happened between then and now, I'm sure you feel the same if you are reading this. I tend to think we only need to look back just 5 years before we can see how much of our lives have changed, and yet it doesn't always feel like life has been that busy!
These 2 paintings were inspired by a trip to the Isle of Man all the way back in 2008. It was a rather sobering holiday, a final trip with my father who was terminally ill at the time. The Isle of Man was his favourite place. Amongst the sadness was a lot of beauty to be found in this precious little island, and I can see why he loved it so much.
The first image was inspired by a Polaroid photo I took - 'shooting from the hip', I think it's called, where you don't even look through the viewfinder. It had been chucking it down with rain, then the downpour suddenly stopped, instantly followed by phenomenal sunshine rays beaming through the dark clouds. So out the Polaroid came, and down the button went! Out popped a really pretty, almost mystical looking image of light and dark.Â
The second image was inspired by moments looking out at the ocean, and just trying not to think. Just look, and try to be still. Admiring the vastness of the ocean and the sky.
I loved painting these two. I may do some more semi-abstract landscape or oceanscape pieces again soon.
